The Real-Time Monitor's
Virtual Link Monitor measures and displays end-to-end performance
characteristics of site-to-site VPN tunnels crossing IP networks
like the Internet. Metrics presented include bandwidth, bandwidth
loss, and round trip time.
- Bandwidth is a
measure of the rate of data flow through a VPN tunnel.
- Bandwidth loss
is a measure of the packets dropped during communications between
two VPN sites.
- Round trip time
is a measure of the time it takes for a packet to travel from
one gateway to another, and back.

Round trip
time can be plotted and compared to a user defined service level
agreement.
Audit Service
Level Agreements
Metrics displayed by the Virtual Link Monitor can be compared
to a user defined service level agreement (SLA). An SLA may correspond
to network service provider performance guarantee, or to corporate
performance benchmarks. Service level infractions can be viewed
in real time, or they can be logged for periodical analysis with reporting tools.
Maximize VPN ROI
To maximize VPN ROI, most organizations would like to take advantage
of their VPN networks for as many applications as possible. However,
many are hesitant to deploy certain applications due to uncertainties
regarding performance across public networks like the Internet.
The Virtual Link Monitor can provide network managers with the
end-to-end performance information necessary to make this decision
confidently.
